Born and raised in Tartu, Estonia, Laur Joamets has built a career that bridges the vibrant music scenes of Estonia and the American South. Known for his expressive playing style and versatility, Joamets has worked as a guitarist, arranger, recording musician with many of Estonia’s most recognized artists. His musicianship has also been featured in popular Estonian television productions such as Estonian Idol, where he performed as part of the studio bands behind the country’s biggest live broadcasts.
Since 2013, Joamets has lived and worked in Nashville, thanks to a fortunate coincidence when he was planning a trip to the United States at the same time country artist Sturgill Simpson was searching for a guitarist for his touring band. Relocating to Nashville, the heart of American roots music, Joamets quickly became part of one of modern country music’s most celebrated lineups. During their collaboration, he toured relentlessly across North America countless times, as well as several times in Europe, and finally returned to Estonia in 2025. As a member of Simpson’s band, Laur contributed to three critically acclaimed albums, including Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, a Grammy-nominated breakthrough record widely regarded as a modern country classic, and A Sailor's Guide to Earth, which won the Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 2017. His work on Metamodern Sounds in Country Music also earned him a nomination for Instrumentalist of the Year at the prestigious Americana Music Honors & Awards in Nashville.
Beyond the recording studio and concert halls, Joamets has appeared on some of America’s most iconic late-night television programs, performing on shows hosted by David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, and Jimmy Fallon.
From 2017 onward, Joamets expanded his career further as both a sought-after studio guitarist in Nashville and a touring member of Drivin N Cryin, blending his roots-rock sensibilities with decades of American rock tradition. In 2024, he reunited with Sturgill Simpson for another major creative chapter, contributing to the ambitious and chart-climbing album Mutiny After Midnight.
